Tiwi Islands Football League

Australian Rules football holds a special position in the lives of all Tiwis. At present about 500 or 20% of all Tiwis play in regular football competitions arranged for boys and girls, men and women on both Melville and Bathurst Islands.

The Tiwi Islands Football League (TIFL) Grand Finals held on the last Sunday in March each year. No permits are needed to come to the Tiwi Islands for this event and on 30th March 2003, more than 1500 visitors and football identities swelled the crowds at the Stanley Tipiloura Oval in Nguiu. The senior competition was an exciting contest between Pumaralli from Nguiu and Muluwurri from Milikapiti with Pumaralli the 2003 Premier team.
